Why your pigmentation keeps coming back
Most patients who tell us laser did not work for their pigmentation had a laser course that worked perfectly — and then twelve weeks of sun exposure that undid it.
Read articleWavelength decides whether this is safe for you. Everything else is secondary.
There is one question worth asking before you book laser hair removal anywhere in India, and it is not about price, packages or how many sessions are included.
It is: what wavelength is your device, and is it a laser or IPL?
Laser hair removal works by targeting melanin in the hair follicle. The difficulty on Indian skin is that there is also melanin in the epidermis — the layer the energy has to pass through to reach the follicle.
Shorter wavelengths are absorbed heavily by that surface melanin. On pale skin, where there is little of it, this is fine. On Fitzpatrick IV to VI, the energy is absorbed before it reaches the target, which produces two outcomes at once: no result, and a burn.
Longer wavelengths penetrate past the epidermis. An 810nm diode, or a 1064nm Nd:YAG for the deepest skin tones, reaches the follicle while leaving surface melanin relatively undisturbed. Add contact cooling that holds the skin surface at around five degrees, and the treatment becomes both safe and genuinely comfortable.
Intense pulsed light is a broad-spectrum flash lamp, not a laser. It emits many wavelengths at once, including the short ones that are absorbed by epidermal melanin. It is cheaper for a clinic to buy and it works reasonably on pale skin with dark hair.
On Indian skin it is, in our view, the single most common cause of the burns and post-inflammatory pigmentation we see in patients arriving from other clinics. If a price seems unusually low, ask whether the device is IPL.
This is permanent reduction, not permanent removal. Expect eighty to ninety per cent fewer hairs, with what remains finer and lighter. Hormonal change can reactivate dormant follicles, so most people have a maintenance session once or twice a year. Any clinic promising you will never shave again is overstating what the technology does.
This page is general information and is not a substitute for a medical consultation. Suitability for any treatment can only be assessed in person by a qualified clinician, who will review your history, medication and skin before recommending anything.
